How to Use Silverette® Nursing Cups: A Step-by-Step Guide

By Anh, the official Australian distributor of Silverette®, who has used Silverette® herself since 2014.

Soothe and Protect Tender Nipples with 925 Silver

Silverette® nursing cups are designed to create a protected environment that naturally soothes and protects tender nipple skin. They work best when worn between feeds or pumping sessions.

We recommend wearing your cups continuously between feeds until breastfeeding is well established and comfortable.

Silverette® can be used before and after birth as a preventative step for sensitive nipples, and to soothe and protect nipples that are tender from breastfeeding or expressing.

If you have any concerns, or if pain continues, please seek help from your doctor, midwife or lactation consultant.

How to Use Silverette® Nursing Cups

Step 1: Place your cups.
Express a couple of drops of breast milk into each cup, then place a cup over each nipple, with the rim resting on the areola. Secure them with your nursing bra.

Step 2: Remove before feeding.
Before breastfeeding, remove the cups and clean your nipples with warm water or a water wipe.

Step 3: Rinse and repeat.
Once feeding is finished, rinse the cups with warm water, pat dry, and repeat Step 1 between feeds.

Leaking? You can wear nursing pads over your cups for extra protection from leaks.

Common Breastfeeding Nipple Issues

Breastfeeding is natural, but it doesn't always come easily. Here are some of the issues many mums experience, what to look out for, and when to get help.

Sore or cracked nipples
Tender, sore or cracked nipples are very common in the early days of breastfeeding, and are often linked to how your baby latches. A midwife or lactation consultant can help you check your baby's latch and positioning. Silverette® can be worn between feeds to soothe and protect tender nipple skin.

Nipple thrush
Thrush is a fungal infection that can cause burning or shooting nipple pain, often continuing after feeds, and nipples that look shiny, pink or flaky. Your baby may also have white patches in their mouth. Thrush needs to be diagnosed and treated by a health professional, and usually both mum and baby are treated.

Mastitis
Mastitis is inflammation of the breast. It can cause a red, painful, swollen area, and sometimes fever or flu-like symptoms. If you think you may have mastitis, see your doctor promptly, as it may need medical treatment.

Milk blebs
A milk bleb is a small white or yellow spot on the tip of the nipple, caused by a blocked nipple pore. It can be painful during feeds. A lactation consultant or doctor can advise on how to manage it.

Important: Silverette® is not a treatment for thrush, mastitis, milk blebs or any other medical condition. If you're receiving treatment, check with your health professional before using Silverette®, and follow their advice.

Getting the Best from Your Silverette® Cups

Use Silverette® on its own
Silverette® works best on clean skin, without creams, oils or lotions underneath. These create a barrier between your skin and the 925 silver, so avoid using them at the same time as your cups.

When to seek professional advice
If you notice pain that doesn't improve, redness, swelling, fever, or anything that worries you, please see your doctor, midwife or lactation consultant promptly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I wear Silverette® cups?

Wear them continuously between feeds until breastfeeding is well established and comfortable.

Why do I put breast milk in the cups?

Adding a couple of drops of breast milk helps create the moist, protected environment inside the dome where silver's natural properties work with your skin.

Can I use Silverette® during pregnancy?

Yes. Silverette® can be used before birth as a preventative step for sensitive nipples.

Can I wear nursing pads with Silverette®?

Yes. You can wear nursing pads over your cups for extra protection from leaks.

Can I use nipple cream with Silverette®?

Silverette® works best on its own. Creams, oils and lotions create a barrier between your skin and the silver, so avoid using them at the same time as your cups.
